Quick start

This page is the short path. Each step links to the full guide when you need the details.

Before you start

  • A Linux server with Docker Engine 24+ and 4 GB of RAM
  • A domain name, with a DNS record pointing to the server
  • A reverse proxy that can terminate HTTPS for that domain
  • A Resend account with that domain verified, and an API key

Install

  1. Run the installer

    Terminal window
curl -fsSL https://get.spellcache.com | sudo sh

It downloads the files of the latest release into /srv/spellcache, asks for the public URL, the administrator’s email and the Resend key, generates the secrets, starts the containers and queues the catalogue import (twenty minutes to an hour). To do each step by hand instead, follow Installation.

  2. Put HTTPS in front

Point your reverse proxy to 127.0.0.1:3000. Examples for nginx, Caddy and Cloudflare Tunnel are in Reverse proxy.

  3. Check that everything runs

    Terminal window
    cd /srv/spellcache
    docker compose -f docker-compose.example.yml ps
    docker compose -f docker-compose.example.yml logs -f worker

Every service shows healthy, and the worker logs the import. If web stays starting, see Troubleshooting.

  4. Sign in

Open your domain, enter the administrator’s email, and type the code from the email. This first account is the administrator. Invite the others from Settings › Administration › Users.

Before you forget

  • Add the two cron entries: nightly run and backup.
  • Set BACKUP_DEST and BACKUP_PASSPHRASE in /srv/spellcache/.env (openssl rand -base64 32), and keep a copy of the passphrase somewhere else than the server.
  • Run a first backup by hand.

Then send your playgroup to the user guide.
